Diplomystus was a herring-like fish that lived mostly in the early Eocene, and was prolific in freshwater environments across the world. Diplomystus is recognisable by its upturned mouth, suggesting this fish was a surface feeder. These predatory fish fed on smaller species such as Knightia. Occasionally, fossils of smaller fish can be found lodged in the throats of large Diplomystus specimens!
