Goniotite (Morocco, 360 million years)Ammonites were aquatic molluscs and existed between the Devonian and Cretaceous period. The closest modern day equivalent are the octopus and the squid.
So far there have been more than 10,000 ammonite species identified.
The fine “suture marks” along the surface of the fossil mark where the internal walls (septa) met the outer shell. It is believed that the complexity of these sutures helped reinforce the shells while maintaining buoyancy and structural integrity, allowing ammonites to withstand deep-sea pressure without their shells collapsing.
Scientists have yet to determine exactly how these sutures formed, but the fossils record shows they evolved over millions of years, becoming increasingly complex.
