During Rome's imperial era (31 BC – AD 476) archers, known as "sagittarii," a term meaning "those who go with the bow," became a crucial component of the Roman army.

While mercenary foot archers had already served in the Roman republican army, the introduction of cavalry archers came after Rome's encounters with Eastern armies in the 1st century BC—most notably with the Parthians, whose mounted archers resulted in a major defeat for Roman commander Crassus's in the Battle of Carrhae (53 BC).

Roman archers, both infantry and cavalry, typically used composite bows made from wood, bone, and animal hide. Unfortunately, due to the organic materials used, few examples of these bows survived today.

Early Roman arrowheads were typically long and three-bladed, designed to pierce armour deeply and cause significant damage. By the 3rd century AD, however, four-vane arrowheads became more common. This shift may have been due to the ease of production, making the four-vane type more practical for large-scale manufacturing.
