Mycenaean Greece marked the final phase of the Bronze Age in ancient Greece, spanning from around 1750 to 1050 BC. It was the first advanced civilization to emerge on the Greek mainland, distinguished by its urban organisation, engineering innovation, works of art, and the development of a writing system. Their syllabic script, Linear B, offers the first written records of the Greek language.

The decline of Mycenaean Greece coincided with the broader collapse of Bronze Age cultures across the eastern Mediterranean. This led to what is known as the Greek Dark Ages, a transitional period largely devoid of written records, which eventually gave way to the rise of Archaic Greece.

Although no definitive cause for the Mycenaean collapse has been established, scholars suggest a combination of contributing factors, such as natural disasters, internal conflict, disruptions in trade, and invasions by the mysterious “Sea Peoples” —a confederation of raiders who attacked coastal cities throughout the Eastern Mediterranean during this period.

The large V-shaped arrowhead is one of the earliest and longest-used designs, dating back to 2000 BC and remaining common until the end of the Mycenaean period. These arrowheads featured a tang (a central projection at the base) that was inserted into a hollow reed arrow shaft and then secured with cord or sinew.

Once the arrowhead pierced the flesh, the lateral barbs ensured it would remain embedded. This design meant that even if the arrow didn’t kill the target immediately, the victim could still succumb to blood loss or further injury from the wound.
