  • Utahraptor (“Utah’s Predator”)

Timeline: Early Cretaceous (135 to 130 million years ago)
    Size: 6-7 metres in length
    Range: North America
Habitat: Open forest, grassy plains and floodplain prairies
    Diet: Carnivorous

Utahraptor, a genus of large dromaeosaurid dinosaurs, is represented by a single species, Utahraptor ostrommaysi. This robust, bipedal carnivore is the largest-known member of the family Dromaeosaurida, measuring approximately 6–7 metres in length.

The jaws of Utahraptor were lined with small, serrated teeth that were used in conjunction with a large sickle shaped "killing claw" on its second toe to dispatch its prey.

Unlike many other dromaeosaurs, which relied on speed to pursue their targets, evidence from its leg physiology suggests that Utahraptor was likely an ambush predator, using stealth and power to overwhelm its victims.

A significant discovery in 2001 shed further light on this prehistoric predator. At a fossil site, paleontologists unearthed the remains of at least seven Utahraptors alongside what appeared to be a large herbivore, possibly an iguanodont. It is believed that the group may have become trapped in quicksand, either while hunting the herbivore or feeding on its carcass. This intriguing find raises the possibility that Utahraptor hunted in packs. However, it remains unclear whether the dinosaurs became trapped simultaneously during a coordinated attack or fell into the pit one by one, drawn by the promise of an easy meal.
