Carcharocles Megalodon Tooth
-
Megalodon (“Big Tooth”)
Timeline: Early miocene - Pliocene (23 - 3.6 million years ago)
Size: 10 - 20 metres
Range: Worldwide
Habitat: Wide range of marine environments (shallow coastal waters, littoral zone, swampy coastal lagoons, and offshore deep water environments)
Diet: CarnivorousNot only is the Megalodon the largest shark, it is also one of the largest fish to ever exist. Upper estimates place the shark at up to 20 metres in length, and a single tooth can measure 18 cm from base to tip! They fed on dolphins and whales primarily, and could take down prey as big as sperm whales. A 16 metre long individual could have weighed up to 61.5 metric tons in body mass, and would have needed to consume 98,175 kcal of food per day.
For 13 million years this enormous shark dominated the oceans until its extinction just 3.6 million years ago. Dinosaurs and megalodon sharks never coexisted, as dinosaurs died out about 66 million years ago, while the oldest megalodon fossils are from the Miocene Epoch 23 million years ago.
Megalodon eventually became extinct as cooling climates restricted its range and prey. It also faced competition by other large predator species such as toothed whales and great white sharks, which also may have contributed to its demise.
